Tips for Snowplowing with ATV or UTV

When the snow starts piling up, ATV and UTV owners have a significant advantage over those using shovels and snow blowers. Equipping your off-road vehicle (ORV) with a snowplow transforms winter into your playground. No longer will you dread blizzard forecasts; instead, you might even look forward to them. Explore our list of tips and tricks designed to make plowing driveways, access roads, paths and more both efficient and fun.

1. Make Sure Your Machine Can Handle Plowing

Before you try installing a plow on your off-road vehicle, check your owner’s manual to make sure it can be equipped with a plow.

Equipped with the right features, both ATVs and UTVs are excellent tools for snow plowing. The best choice between the two depends on your specific needs. If you’re looking to regularly clear a small walkway or driveway, a narrow ATV or 4-wheeler with a small plow might do just fine. For bigger driveways, access roads and other larger areas, a UTV capable of handling a heavier, wider snowplow is often the better choice.

2. Stay on Top of Vehicle Maintenance

To handle the rigorous demands of winter plowing, it's essential to keep your  ATV or UTV/side-by-side (SxS) in peak condition, considering the extra load shoving snow puts on your machine. Take time before the first flake falls to give your ORV a thorough once-over and tend to any maintenance or service needs. Many riders do this in the fall while the weather’s still pleasant, which helps them roll into the plowing season with a bit more confidence, ready to tackle whatever Mother Nature throws their way.

During the winter plowing season, it's crucial to stay on top of routine inspections and quickly address any maintenance issues they reveal. Always ensure fluid levels are sufficient to keep your equipment running smoothly.

3. Properly Equip Your ATV or UTV for Snow Plowing

To effectively equip your ATV or UTV for snow plowing, there are several pieces of equipment and accessories that are crucial for optimal performance.

Snowplow System

To install a plow, you need a complete plow system, including a blade and mounting setup designed for your vehicle. Plow systems range from simple to advanced. For ease of use, consider a powered lift system or winch. Before purchasing, make sure the plow kit fits your vehicle and that you have the tools to install.

Proper Tires & Tracks

You’ll also want to make sure you’ve equipped your vehicle with tires that handle well in snow. Tracks, or chains, can provide the additional traction necessary to power through heavy snow and icy surfaces.

Protective Clothing & Gear

Don’t forget about protective gear for yourself, such as snow goggles, a helmet and gloves, to stay safer and comfortable while operating your ORV in winter conditions. Consider heated apparel to stay warmer while working

4. Use Effective Plowing Techniques

Implementing effective snow plowing techniques with your ATV or UTV can significantly enhance the efficiency and safety of your snow clearing endeavors. Here's a few to consider:

Make Sure the Plow Depth is Correct

Adjust your plow depth based on the snowpack's thickness. You want to avoid digging into bare earth or pavement. If you live in a climate where snow tends to accumulate over the winter, you’ll likely lower the plow over time. Keep it high early in the season or when the snowpack is light.

Adjust Plow Angle to the Slope

Consider the ground's incline and adjust the plow angle to align. If you’re plowing your driveway, for example, it likely slopes away from the house. Plow with the slope to clear snow more effectively.

Maintain Optimal Speed

Plowing at a steady pace helps prevent the plow from digging too deep or bouncing, which can cause damage or inefficient clearing. Avoid high speeds to maintain control, especially on icy surfaces.

Overlap Each Pass

Slightly overlap each pass to ensure complete clearance and a clean and even surface. Watch for hidden obstacles beneath snow piles, such as rocks or branches, which could impede progress or damage equipment.

Pro Tip

Make snow removal easier by planning ahead. Clear removable obstacles before the snow falls. Mark permanent obstacles (e.g. retaining walls, well heads, garden beds, etc.) with reflective flags or poles.

By using these strategies, you can maximize your ATV or UTV's effectiveness in winter conditions, making snow clearing a manageable and confident task.

5. Properly Clean Your Plow Before Stowing

When you finish plowing for the day, the job isn't over. It’s important to clean and store the plow attachment properly to prevent damage. Remove any snow, ice or dirt from the plow to avoid freezing and rust. Lower the plow to the ground when parking to reduce strain on the winch and suspension.
