About Polaris®

For millions of people around the world, Polaris has become synonymous with adventure and passion, in both work and play.

Polaris has always forged our own path, creating new ways to help people experience the outdoors to the fullest.

Since our founding in 1954, we've been making high-quality, breakthrough products and broadening the view of powersports—whether it's launching the snowmobile industry, reinventing ATV categories year after year, developing the first purpose-built military vehicles, introducing a radical 3-wheel moto-roadster, or getting people to explore the outdoors by providing a network of ride and drive adventures.

From our entrepreneurial roots as a mechanical shop, we've grown into a global leader with more than 30 brands and multiple services responsible for the company’s growth into a major influencer on powersports and beyond. And in recent years, we've pushed the boundaries of our industry and expanded beyond powersports into adjacent markets, like commercial and military vehicles, and electric vehicles, where we can add value.

We support and serve our employees, customers and the communities in which we work, live and ride through a commitment to quality and safety and environmental stewardship. Under our guiding principle of Best People, Best Team we are committed to helping our employees unleash their full potential and develop their skills to thrive in a customer-centric environment.

We lead a business that is driven by innovation and Polaris continues to Think Outside by offering a diverse portfolio of best-in-class brands which reflect who we are as well as our pioneering approach to always improve how our customers work and play outdoors.

Polaris History
Our Founders
Polaris Founders

The Polaris spirit can be traced back to co-founders Edgar Hetteen, his younger brother Allan and his close friend David Johnson. The hard-working trio started the forerunner of Polaris—Hetteen Hoist & Derrick—in 1945 in tiny Roseau, Minnesota. With World War II raging and metal scarce, their skill at repairing farm machinery quickly earned them loyal customers.

But it was their pioneering approach to finding a better way to get to remote hunting shacks in deep snow that earned them a place in history: Our co-founders developed an early snowmobile in 1955. To prove the vehicles weren't just frivolous toys, Edgar and three friends embarked on a 1,200-mile journey across the Alaskan wilderness to demonstrate the vehicle's durability. They lugged 900 pounds of provisions on toboggans and endured minus-40 degree temperatures to complete the journey in 21 days.

Their determination paid off. The machines became so popular that Polaris began manufacturing snowmobiles exclusively, which we did for many years before launching into additional product lines and services that leveraged our strengths in product development, powertrain, manufacturing, distribution and marketing.

Since adding all-terrain-vehicles (ATVs) in 1984, we've grown to become a global powersports leader, providing some of the best-selling-brands in the industry, including RANGER® utility vehicles, RZR® recreational side-by-sides, Indian Motorcycle®, and GEM® electric vehicles.

More recently, we pushed boundaries and further expanded our offerings to include commercial vehicles, military vehicles and the revolutionary Slingshot® 3-wheel roadster, along with boat offerings from Bennington, Godfrey, Hurricane, Rinker, and Larson to offer even more ways for people to enjoy the outdoors.

We offer premium ride and drive experience opportunities through Polaris Adventures, but we don’t stop there, Polaris enhances the riding experience with parts, garments, and accessories, along with a growing aftermarket portfolio that includes Transamerican Auto Parts.
