Spark plugs should be inspected every 100 hours, 12 months or 1,000 miles (1,600 km) and replaced as needed. Spark plug condition is indicative of engine operation. The spark plug firing end condition should be read after the engine is warmed up and the vehicle is driven at higher speeds. Immediately check the spark plug for correct color.
Warning: A hot exhaust system and engine can cause burns. Wear protective gloves when removing a spark plug for inspection.
Model Year 2018-2019
To inspect the spark plugs, do the following:
1. Lift the cargo box (1) to access the spark plugs.
2. Remove the spark plug caps (2).
3. Using the spark plug wrench provided in the tool kit, remove the plug by rotating the plug counterclockwise.
4. Inspect the spark plugs.
- A normal insulator tip is gray, tan or light brown. There will be few combustion deposits. The electrodes are not burned or eroded. This indicates the proper type and heat range for the engine and the service.
- The tip should not be white. A white insulator tip indicates overheating, caused by use of an improper spark plug or incorrect throttle body adjustments.
- A wet fouled insulator tip is black. A damp oil film covers the firing end. There may be a carbon layer over the entire nose. Generally, the electrodes are not worn. General causes of fouling are excessive oil, use of non-recommended oil or poor fuel quality.
5. Install the new spark plugs or reinstall the old spark plugs using the spark plug wrench provided in the tool kit. Torque to 7.4 ft-lbs (10 Nm).
The recommended spark plug is NGK® MR7F, part number 3022662. Note: Using a non-recommended spark plug can result in serious engine damage. Always use the Polaris-recommended spark plugs or their equivalent.
6. Using a wire-type feeler gauge, ensure the spark plug gap measures 0.75 mm (0.030 in). If necessary, correct the gap by carefully bending the side electrode.
7. Reinstall the spark plug caps.
8. Lower the cargo box.
