Safety Recall - 2009-2010 Sportsman 550-850 Front Suspension

Dear Polaris ATV Owner:

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Polaris Industries Inc. is voluntarily recalling some Model Year 2009 and 2010 Polaris Sportsman 550 and 850 models.

This letter is to notify you that Polaris Industries Inc. has determined that some 2009-2010 Sportsman 550 or 850 models produced on or between January 1, 2009 and August 31, 2009 may have been manufactured with suspension components that do not meet Polaris quality standards. An oversized ball joint stem mounting hole and/or improperly tightened steering knuckle pinch bolts could cause a reduction in the clamp force required to retain the ball joint stem in the steering knuckle. Reduced clamp force may not adequately retain the ball joint stem in all conditions which can result in unwanted movement between the ball joint stem and the steering knuckle. This movement can lead to accelerated wear between the ball joint mounting stem and the steering knuckle. If this has occurred, the steering knuckle(s) must be replaced. Failure of these components may lead to loss of control resulting in an accident and serious personal injury to the operator.

DO NOT OPERATE YOUR VEHICLE UNTIL THIS SAFETY BULLETIN HAS BEEN COMPLETED!

Authorized Polaris ATV dealers were issued Safety Bulletin ATV-09-02 on November 6, 2009. The Safety Bulletin instructs your dealer to inspect each front steering knuckle to determine whether to replace the steering knuckle hardware or to replace the steering knuckle assembly. This work will be performed at no charge to you and will take approximately 30 to 120 minutes to complete, depending on the type of repair that is needed. Please contact your local authorized Polaris ATV dealer to arrange an appointment so the repair can be completed.

This notice was mailed to you according to our most current registration information. If you no longer own this vehicle, or if some of the contact information (such as your address or name) in this notice is incorrect, please contact your local Polaris dealer to complete a transfer of ownership.

While your Polaris ATV dealer is in the best position to answer your questions, if you have any questions your dealer cannot address, you may call our Customer Service Department at: 1-888-704-5290.

If you need assistance contacting or finding a Polaris Dealer, please call 1-800-POLARIS or visit the Polaris web site at polaris.com.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Sincerely,

Laurie Rengel
