Polaris Recalls Some Model Year 2021-2024 MATRYX, 2015-2024 AXYS and 2013-2014 ProStar S4 Snowmobiles

Polaris has determined that with degraded fuel and especially after extended storage, some Model Year 2021-2024 MATRYX, 2015-2024 AXYS and 2013-2014 ProStar S4 snowmobiles may pose a risk of fire due to electrostatic discharge (ESD) inside the fuel tank. Under specific conditions, vapors may be ignited inside the fuel tank during operation, posing a potential injury hazard to consumers.

Number of affected vehicles: Around 285,000 units globally

Number of incidents: Polaris has identified 8 reports of fuel tank ruptures, including 3 incidents of fire and injuries on snowmobiles that had been previously repaired for a recall to address an ESD hazard.

Polaris has issued a solution that will eliminate ESD in the fuel tank and allow owners with impacted snowmobiles to continue riding safely.

Consumers should fill up their snowmobile using the following fuel type:

·         Owners of impacted snowmobiles with a Patriot Boost or Patriot 9R engine, and 600 INDY Cross Country snowmobiles will need to fill up using an oxygenated fuel that is 91 octane or higher and contains 10% ethanol (E10) OR  if ethanol (E10) is not available, use Polaris Anti-Static and Fuel Stabilizer according to the label instructions.

·         Owners of impacted snowmobiles that do NOT have a Patriot Boost engine, Patriot 9R engine or is a 600 INDY Cross Country snowmobile, they will need to fill up using an oxygenated fuel that is 87 octane or higher and contains 10% ethanol (E10) OR if ethanol (E10) is not available, use Polaris Anti-Static and Fuel Stabilizer according to the label instructions.

The 10% ethanol in the fuel combats the electrostatic buildup in the fuel tank system to prevent ESD.

The consumer will also need to change the fuel type designation on the gauge of their impacted snowmobile if they were previously using non-ethanol fuel. S4 ProStars do not have this option.

Polaris has contacted all registered owners directly to provide details about the recall.  More information is available at Polaris.com/snowmobilecustomersafety

Polaris has reported this recall to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Polaris announced this recall on February 14, 2024 and instructed riders to fill up with a fuel that is 91 octane or higher and contains 10% ethanol (E10) so they can continue riding safely while Polaris engineers a permanent fix.

On March 12, 2024, Polaris expanded the fuel options to include E10 (10% ethanol) and are 87 octane of higher for many of the impacted snowmobiles. For customers with an impacted snowmobile that has a Patriot Boost or Patriot 9R engine or is a 600 INDY Cross Country snowmobile, they need to continue following the original fuel recommendation, which is a fuel with E10 (10% ethanol) and is a 91 or higher octane level.

On July 11, 2024, Polaris expanded the impacted population to include 2013-2014 Pro-Ride and 2023-2024 S4 snowmobiles models.

On August 14th, Polaris is communicating to the whole S-24-01 population about the new fuel labels, OM Addendums and Polaris Anti-Static and Fuel Stabilizer availability.
