
Staff Engineer, Specialist – Motorcycle Structures

Responsible for the design and development of frame and structural sub-systems to ensure Indian Motorcycles produces high performing vehicles that meet/exceed the expectations of the customer. Using systems engineering principles, you will convert vehicle requirements to sub-system and component requirements to create the design from. In this role, you will own the design and development of the frame and structure sub-system from concept and architecture tradeoffs to validation problem solving, root cause, and issue resolution.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Engineer and own industry leading motorcycle frame and structural sub-systems to meet/exceed customer expectations and ensure increased profitability and market share.
- Work closely with Vehicle Architects and stakeholders to define structural sub-system requirements. Navigate early project definition ambiguity to be effective in early engineering activities.
- Collaborate with Vehicle Architects, Industrial Design & Design Engineers to ensure appropriate architecture tradeoffs are made for system performance and vehicle styling while accounting for platforming and interfacing sub-system requirements.
- Lead the design of owned sub-systems and ensure production drawings are accurate and properly dimensioned (using KPC’s and GD&T).
- Work in partnership with appropriate CAE & Test Engineers on development & correlation of improved analysis and test methods for owned systems.
- Organize, lead and participate in design reviews to ensure there is adequate input and involvement from all necessary engineering and functional groups.
- Work with Validation Engineers to develop robust & efficient DVPs. Collaborate with Development Engineers & Technicians to ensure development & validation of owned systems is completed.
- Works between Design Engineers, Systems Engineers, Development Engineers and Validation Engineers to root cause and resolve issues to ensure reliability and performance.
- Create and maintain system engineering standards, specifications and lessons learned. Communicate them to the project teams and other systems / design engineers.
- Work with product management and supply chain partners to develop sub-system technology roadmap. Support pre-development and technology projects.
- Evaluate and analyze field issues on existing product, recommend and execute timely solutions.
- Support manufacturing with problem resolution and assembly friendly new product designs.
- Provide system technical support to: Project Engineers, Designers, Design Engineers, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Powertrain, Quality Assurance and Service.
- Cross train and support development and validation of other vehicle subsystems including but not limited to: suspension, brakes, tires, wheels, driveline, hand and foot controls.
- Performs other miscellaneous project related assignments.
- Other tasks and duties as assigned.
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent required.
- 8+ years of system design, development, and test experience required.
- 5+ years of 3-D CAD modeling experience required, Creo Parametric / Pro Engineer preferred.
- Experience with mechanical design for complex systems and structural components preferred.
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools required, Ansys preferred.
- GD&T, FMEA, dimensional tolerance stack-ups and experience with engineering standards preferred.
- Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures to the completion of difficult technical problems and projects.
- Understanding of and desire to drive a systems engineering approach.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- High level of people skills, able to work in a team environment.
- Skilled in prioritizing work and driving many tasks to completion on a similar cadence.

- Ability to work with domestic and international technology partners.
- Experienced in Microsoft software including Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work under pressure and maintain a positive attitude.
