JOB SUMMARY:

As a Principal Data Engineer on the Data and Analytics team, you'll get the opportunity to develop your skills and collaborate across teams at Polaris, a world leader in powersports. You will work closely with our architects to build secure, scalable solutions for operational, reporting and analytical data needs.  You will be a leader in designing, implementing, and maintaining data structures, batch jobs, interfaces to external systems and creating data services.  This role will be responsible for establishing enterprise standards governing data pipelines from data ingestion to consumption within Polaris’ data architecture.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Translate business needs into technical requirements and then analyze, design, build, troubleshoot and maintain data pipelines
  • Set enterprise standards for building data pipelines that are scalable, repeatable, secure and adhere to data quality standards
  • Develop schedules, set priorities, solicit input, providing direction, mentor and manage performance, and ensure high quality customer service and on-time delivery of agreed deliverables
  • Support partnership with external vendors for data solutions and participate in the evaluation and implementation of third-party tools and applications
  • Lead team to resolve systemic or system-wide issues, determine and document root cause and solutions
  • Define and maintain the technology and deployment roadmap
  • Help advance Azure cloud-based data solutions through designing robust, secure and optimized data pipeline architecture
  • Lead innovative data engineering initiatives with companywide impact
  • Lead the strategy and resolution of the most complex and significant data engineering challenges across the organization
  • Provide vision, leadership, and industry expertise regarding large-scale companywide technological innovation strategies that significantly influence the organization's business and financial operations

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, MIS, data science or a related field is required
  • 10+ years of experience within enterprise data environments with increasing scope and responsibility
  • 4+ years’ experience implementing data solutions in cloud environments (Azure preferred) and on prem data centers using ETL tools, SaaS engineering tools (FiveTran, Qlik Replicate), queues, batch scheduling services and various storage solutions
  • 3+ years of people direct/indirect leadership experience (can include coaching, training, and mentoring, etc.)- proven success in building talent and technical ability
  • Proven experience in establishing and implementing enterprise data standards across an organization  
  • Strong and recent SQL and Python experience, experience with R is preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relational database concepts, querying, data warehousing, data modeling, and ETL process.  Additional experience with Streaming and NoSQL databases is preferred.
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
  • Passionate and open to learning new tools and developing with the latest technologies and frameworks
  • Solid analytical, communication, and organizational skills
