To perform an oil and filter change on your RANGER 1000, follow these steps:
1. Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface in a well-ventilated area, ensure the transmission is in PARK and remove the key.
2. Stop the engine, and allow it to cool down before performing this procedure.
3. Place a drain pan under the engine crankcase. Tip: Placing a rag in the bottom of the drain pan will help prevent the splashing of oil.
4. Clean the area around the oil drain plug.
5. Remove the drain plug with a 6mm Allen socket, and allow the oil to drain completely. Caution: Hot oil can cause burns to skin. Do not allow hot oil to contact skin.
6. Remove all cargo from the cargo box, and pull up on the cargo box release lever to tilt the box up.
7. Place a rag under the oil filter to catch any spillage.
8. Use an oil filter wrench, and turn the filter counterclockwise to remove.
9. Using a clean dry cloth, clean the filter sealing surface on the engine crankcase.
10. Lubricate the O-ring on the new oil filter with a film of fresh engine oil. Check to make sure the O-ring is in good condition.
11. Install the new filter, and rotate it clockwise by hand until the filter gasket contacts the sealing surface then turn it an additional 3/4 turn. A new oil filter is part number 2540086.
12. Replace the sealing washer on the drain plug. Note: The sealing washer on the drain plug should be clean and free of burrs, nicks or scratches. A new sealing washer is part number 5812232.
13. Reinstall the engine crankcase drain plug, and torque to 12 ft-lbs (16 Nm).
14. Remove the oil fill cap and fill the engine with the recommended amount of engine oil. The capacity is 2.5 qts (2.4 l). 1 gallon of PS-4 Full Synthetic Engine Oil is part number 2876245 and 1 quart of PS-4 Full Synthetic Engine Oil is part number 2876244.
15. Verify the transmission is still in PARK, and start the engine, allowing it to idle for 30 seconds.
16. Stop the engine, and inspect for leaks. Wait at least 15 seconds before removing the dipstick.
17. Unlock the dipstick lever, and remove the dipstick and wipe it dry with a clean shop rag.
18. Re-install the dipstick, and push it into place. Do not lock the dipstick. Notice: Make certain the dipstick is threaded all the way into the dipstick tube to keep the depth of the dipstick consistent.
19. Remove the dipstick, and check the oil level.
20. Add the recommended oil as necessary to bring the oil level within the SAFE range on the dipstick. Do not overfill.
21. Reinstall the oil fill cap, oil dipstick and the lock lever.
22. Lower the cargo box.
23. Dispose of the used oil and filter properly at your local recycling center.
