To remove and install the battery on your RANGER 1000, follow these steps:
1. Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface, ensure it is in PARK and remove the key.
2. Lift the seat, and remove the battery lid under the rear most passenger seat to access the battery.
3. Disconnect the black (negative) battery cable first with a 10mm socket, to prevent arcing. Set the cable aside.
4. Disconnect the red (positive) cable with a 10mm socket and set aside.
5. Remove the battery hold-down strap with a 10mm socket.
6. Lift the battery out of the vehicle. Be careful not to tip a flooded battery sideways, which could spill electrolyte. Note: If electrolyte spills, immediately wash it off with a solution of one tablespoon baking soda and one cup of water to prevent damage to the vehicle.
7. If reinstalling the battery, ensure that the battery is fully charged and free of any dirt or debris to prevent damage. Follow the instructions in the Battery Charging section of your Owner's Manual before installing the battery. A new battery is part number 4014132.
8. Clean any dirt or debris from the battery tray.
9. Place the battery in the battery holder. Note: Apply dielectric grease or petroleum jelly to the battery terminals before reinstalling connectors.
10. Connect and tighten the red (positive) cable first, and torque to 40 in-lbs (4.5 Nm).
11. Connect and tighten the black (negative) cable, and torque to 40 in-lbs (4.5 Nm).
12. Install the battery hold-down strap, and tighten the screws.
13. Verify the cables are secure and properly routed.
14. Reinstall the battery compartment cover, and lower the seat.
15. Turn the key to the ON position, and verify the battery has been connected properly. Note: When the battery is disconnected, the vehicle’s clock may need to be reset.
